Ce reflex Zeiss Ikon est l'évolution du Contaflex I (861/24) produit à partir de 1953. La principale amélioration de cet appareil, dont la construction a commencé en 1957, reste l'interchangeabilité de l'objectif. Il a été produit en même temps que son frère jumeau, le Contaflex IV (864/24), qui, lui, possède en plus une cellule.
